- lies superficial to popliteal vessels
- extending from superior angle to inferior angle
- crossing popliteal vessels from lateral to medial side
- BRANCHES
- muscular branches
- cutaneous branches
- articular branches
- IN THE BACK OF LEG
- passes deep to tendinous arch of soleus
- runs downwards and medially to reach
- posteromedial side of ankle
- midway between medial malleolus and medial tubercle of calcaneum
- terminates deep to flexor retinaculum
- at origin of abductor hallucis
- dividing in to medial and lateral plantar nerves
- IN THE FOOT
- Medial plantar nerve
- passes between abductor hallucis and flexor digitorum brevis
- divide further in to branches ( similar to median nerve )
- cutaneous supply
- motor supply
- Lateral plantar nerve ( resembles ulnar nerve )
- passes laterally and forward until the base of fifth metatarsal bone
- divides in to superficial and deep branches
