COURSE
POPLITEAL FOSSA
lies superficial to popliteal vessels
extending from superior angle to inferior angle
crossing popliteal vessels from lateral to medial side
BRANCHES
muscular branches
cutaneous branches
articular branches
IN THE BACK OF LEG
passes deep to tendinous arch of soleus
runs downwards and medially to reach
posteromedial side of ankle
midway between medial malleolus and medial tubercle of calcaneum
terminates deep to flexor retinaculum
at origin of abductor hallucis
dividing in to medial and lateral plantar nerves
IN THE FOOT
Medial plantar nerve
passes between abductor hallucis and flexor digitorum brevis
divide further in to branches ( similar to median nerve )
cutaneous supply
motor supply
Lateral plantar nerve ( resembles ulnar nerve )
passes laterally and forward until the base of fifth metatarsal bone
divides in to superficial and deep branches
