    * shape 
      * pyramid shaped cartilages 
        * apex 
          * curved posteromedially 
          * articulates with corniculate cartilage

          * concave 
          * articulates with 
            * lateral part of upper border of cricoid lamina
          * prolonged anteriorly  to form 
            * vocal process 
              * vocal fold is attached here 
              * vocalis muscle also attaches
              * Above vocal process 
                * vestibular fold is attached 
          * prolonged laterally to form 
            * muscular process
              * posterior aspect gives insertion to 
                * posterior cricoarytenoid 
              * anterior aspect gives insertion to 
                * lateral cricoarytenoid 
      * surfaces 
        * anterolateral
        * medial 
        * posterior 
          * transverse arytenoid across two cartilages 
      * between base and apex 
        * oblique arytenoid 
          * continues as aryepiglottic muscle in to two sides of epiglottis 
    * situation 
      * lies on upper border of 
        * lamina of cricoid cartilage
